About the Artists
Randy Brecker
A true jazz legend, Randy Brecker has been a major presence on the world jazz scene as a trumpeter, composer, bandleader and recording artist since his emergence in the 1960s with Blood Sweat and Tears. His horn has graced the bandstands and recordings of Horace Silver, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Charles Mingus, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, Duke Pearson, Frank Foster, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth and countless others. As a first call studio player, Randy has energized innumerable studio sessions by artists ranging from James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Parliament-Funkadelic to David Sanborn, and Frank Zappa. With his brother saxophonist Michael, the establishment in 1975 of “The Brecker Brothers” proved to be the birth of one of the most influential jazz-fusion bands in history. A recipient of multiple Grammy Awards in both small and large group settings, Randy Brecker is a true musical pioneer who continues to perform extensively around the world.
Helen Sung
Acclaimed pianist/composer Helen Sung diverged from her classical roots after encountering jazz while studying at the University of Texas at Austin. A native Houstonian and alumna of HSPVA, she went on to graduate from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance. With nine leader albums to her credit (her debut big band album is slated for release in 2025), Helen and her band tour both nationally and abroad. She has also worked with such luminaries as Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Regina Carter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and the Mingus Big Band. She currently teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Columbia University, where she was the first jazz artist-in-residence at its Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute exploring intersections of jazz & neuroscience. A Steinway Artist and Guggenheim Fellow, “Sung plays with crisp swing and elegant invention, her rhythms drawing from the music’s deepest blues roots – and setting listeners’ heads bobbing – while she explores her own fresh ideas, often inspired from her classical training.” (New York Times)
